Adept

On this day I learned one of the main rules of street photography - always take your camera with you. It was a basic half-hour walk from home to the store, where Cléa and I bought a coffee table to put it next to the bed.

Since the table was very light, I carried it in my hands.

The situation itself seemed to me worthy of a street photo - it is not every day that you see people walking around Paris with furniture in their hands. And I asked Cléa to take a photo of me. But as I am not strong in posing, I end all any photo sessions by doing silly faces.

Only this time instead of doing faces I decided to put that table on my head.

Unexpectedly, what was supposed to be foolishness, captivated me. The table laid on my shoulders very comfortably, and its rounded shape resembled a suit helmet of an astronaut, which, combined with a strict black trench, created a very appealing visual image.

For the next half an hour I spent posing with a table on my head, trying to imagine the daily life of a table-headed alien in Paris.

The most successful, in my opinion, was my portrait against the white wall.

As the black coat contrasted too much with the background, I decided to put my hands on my chest to somehow balance the highlights and shadows. The idea turned out to be very successful, as the unusual hand position together with the even less familiar circle on my head formed a kind of religious image.

This portrait reminds me of Byzantine icons where saints are depicted with a halo surrounding their heads. My first thought was to call this photo “Saint”, but in order not to seem too immodest and not to touch anyone's feelings, I decided to limit myself with “Adept”.
