Cléa’s portrait

On this day I decided to come back to the black and white photography for a while. (3/3)

I have never practiced portrait photography, and it was difficult for me to understand what I should start from.

So I decided to concentrate on what I knew and what I had worked with before - bright rays of sunlight.

In our small room under the old triangular roof, there was a small window. And on sunny, bright days, this window let in a bright ray of sun that cut through the darkness of the attic.

This ray of light was so bright and saturated that I could literally see the corners of its square shape and it seemed like I could touch it.

One by one I sit my models in a chair so that their faces would be illuminated by this ray. In this way I could separate my friends’ faces from the rest of the background.

Thanks to the brightness and contrast of the lighting, the illuminated faces were swamped in black. The result was very impressive - Cléa, Alex and Anna looked as if they were painted by Caravaggio, a great master who wrapped his characters in total darkness.
